creativity & curiosity

One of the most important goals I have with all of my students is that they have the opportunity to develop a strong and lasting relationship to music through the things that matter most to them. Creativity begins with curiosity, and when we’re encouraged to explore what intrigues or appeals to us, our relationship to learning becomes exciting, positive, and memorable.

A student that has autonomy is an empowered one!

building

foundational skills

Within the overarching values of empowered + gentle learning lies another goal: to prepare students well for the music they want to create. This means that I strive to give each of my students the tools they need to understand what, how, and why music is created and played the way that it is. In order to play expressively, we need to understand how to connect emotionally to the music. In order to play written music effortlessly, we need to have strong note and rhythm comprehension skills. In order to play virtuosically, we need to understand how our body and hands can move to make that possible. In order to improvise, create, and understand what music is to begin with, we need to understand music theory.

All of these skills together form a well-rounded musician…no matter what type of music they play!

creating

welcoming learning experiences

I believe in the importance of cultivating a lesson environment where students are always encouraged to be themselves and be honest about what they’re feeling from week to week. Learning isn’t always easy, and all students deserve to feel like they have someone there to help guide them through challenges instead of someone who shames them for the struggle.

A tough week of practice, or a week of no practice? No problem! If there were any hurdles, we’ll figure out what they were and work together to get back on track. And if a student has a specific goal that requires more focus, I’ll help them figure out a realistic + attainable practice routine that helps them get there.
