Meet your teacher
I’m Sarah, an artist at heart with a love for adventure and beauty in every area of her life.
Classical piano became a serious area of interest for me in middle school, and after beginning lessons it quickly became my favorite way to spend time at home. I started a teaching practice in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio, graduated with my B.A. in Music, and moved to NYC in 2021. I now have 18 years of teaching experience across hundreds of students, and reside here in Brooklyn Heights. I truly love what I do, and I’m glad that you’re here!
ETHOS
I believe in building strong foundations.
As we explore piano music together, students will be taught foundational skills such as rhythm, music theory, technique, and note-reading so that they have the ability to understand music from the inside out. By developing an understanding of the inner workings that go into making music beautiful and possible, students will cultivate the ability to connect to their own musicality and play the piano with ease and expressiveness.
I believe in creating safe spaces.
I maintain high standards for my students while ensuring positivity and encouragement are at the center of every lesson, because learning to play the piano deserves to be an inspiring, creative, and explorative process—never a source of heartache. Students are always encouraged to be themselves, ask questions, and engage in the learning process in the way that most resonates with them.
I believe in embracing individuality.
Methodology
After 18 years of teaching and hundreds of students passing through my life, I’ve experienced firsthand how every person learns in their own way. My lessons are designed to reflect each student’s interests, personality, and learning style, and weekly practice habits are encouraged to be sustainable and realistic. We’ll work together to discover the part of making music that speaks most to you, and use that to guide our time together.
PIANO LESSON
Offerings
-
If you or a child are interested in beginning to learn how to play the piano for the very first time, this is the perfect place to start! Most of the students that enroll with me are first time students, regardless of their age. We’ll focus on cultivating musical awareness, building a strong foundation, and growing all of the skills needed to become a confident and expressive pianist.
-
If you or a child are interested in coming back to the piano after months or years (or decades!) away, I can’t wait to help reignite the musical spark! I love that life has a way of bringing us back to the things we love. We’ll establish a starting point, fill in any missing gaps and then work to build new skills and knowledge from there.
-
If you or a child are interested in growing an existing set of musical skills, switching to a new teacher, or honing in on a particular area of study, I’d love to work with you! We’ll first take some time to talk about any desired goals and play through current material before creating a plan that allows for new growth.
